The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid
This one was ok, but the ending let me down a bit. The reviews alluded to a killer ending, but it was a bit average.
The Plot - aging Hollywood star Evelyn, who is based on various starlets, wants to do a final tell all , and put her story right. And only wants Monique to tell the story. Monique is a nobody journalist, so why her. And as the story progresses, Monique hints that the truth will end up making her hate Evelyn. Oooooh, intriguing.
The main feature with Monique is a black woman she has written a previous article about the right to die. That features later, and is also a bit average. Her background - her Dad died at a young age by drink driving.
So Evelyn has 7 husbands, and it's all epic and would make a great TV series over 7 parts. But they're making it into a movie at this stage. That won't work. It'll be rushed.
Evelyns greatest love is Celia St Clair, a woman. So she's bisexual in the 1950's onwards, and that would be shocking. And one of her husbands is her main producer, Harry, who is gay. They get married as part of a cover up (Elton John and Renata) He ends up dying in a car crash drink driving with another man, and Evelyn covers that up, by switching the bodies, and making it look like the other man was the drink driver.
The final reveal is that the man was black, and was Moniques father - so he never was a drink driver, and ....well, I'm not really sure what the HUGE deal is. Evelyn switched the bodies, but she didn't kill the guy. Anyway, when Monique finally finds out she hates Evelyn, even though Evelyn could have just never contacted Monique. She wanted to give Monique the letters from her Dad to Harry, so that Monique could empathise while writing the story, I guess. Anyway, shock Horror, what a big twist.....meh, not really
And then Evelyn kills herself, and Monique realises she's going to do it, and is in a quandary as to whether to stop her or not, but realises, this is the other reason she was chosen, and it would be immoral (forget possibly illegal) to turn a blind eye. So Evelyn dies, and Monique writes the book, and tells the world she had a wife as well as 7 husbands. And she never reveals to her mother the truth about her father, which is what Evelyn probably should have done as well.
Good story, but the ending was a bit forced for the sake of a twist.
